Engine noise at idle

Started the engine from cold, heard a gurgling sound for a fraction of a second, then a screech for a fraction of a second and then a rattle. Turned the motor off for a couple of minutes then re-started it. Sounded OK so I drove it home (about 15 miles). Left it idling whilst I opened the driveway gates & the rattling was back. It is an intermittent/irregular sharp noise which sounds like something is possibly being thrown around inside the bellhousing. Any ideas?

Just looked underneath now that it has cooled down, there are a few drops of coolant there. Hope its just a failed water pump.

Just had a proper look today, its definitely the water pump! The pulley is wobbling all over the place. Can't believe how expensive a water pump is, £220 for a genuine one. Aftermarket pumps vary in price from £80 to £180. Probably go for genuine as I am wary of most aftermarket parts, especially something as important as a water pump.

Amen to that, stay away from the aftermarket ones, I have heard nothing but bad things. unless of course you like doing things twice
