Question 2002 Porsche Boxster

Mechanic says I should replace the ignition coils, car has 78,000 miles on it. How often should I do this, and same question with spark plugs, how often to change them as well? Car is apart right now due to replacing shaft bearing upgrade to new, so is now the time to do this ignition coil and spark plug replacement. He says he will not charge labor since its easily accessible now. Car is not misfiring fyi. Thanks for any replies. Also mechanic says he sees small cracks in some of the ignition coils. They are probably the originals but not certain.Smile
Thanks
Gary

There is sometimes preventative maintenance recommended service, but really if there is no mis why would you spent that kind of money. My durametric diagonostic will show if there are any misfires and trust me if you shut down one cylinder, manually , there is no doubt if the coils are working. Weak coil/s will manifest poor performance or the mis but my 01 S sets at 92,000, no problems. Plugs same drill.

Thank you turboflyer for the helpful reply. What about the notorious intermediate shaft bearing on the 02 Boxster, should this be replaced if it is the original and I see no metal filings in the oil or oil filter, I mean just as a precaution given all the known issues others have had? What is your experience on this topic? I hope I even got the name of that part correct, but I think thats what it is called.
Thx
Gary

The thing that is common to do while doing the IMS bearing is the AOS (Air Oil Separator). Much easier to do while the transmission is out.

How much preventative maintenance to do is almost a personal preference. Do too much and you waste money? Too little and you risk a problem at an awkward time/place. Your risk tolerance is different than mine. So it is right for you. (When I bought second Boxster at 36k or so miles I put more than $1k into it in PM. It was wonderfully reliable for the next 5 years. )

If you don't know the age of the water pump I would highly recommend changing it. The water pump is a maintenance item 5yrs or 50k or $10k if you wait.. Ask me how I know...

Thank you Mikefocke and Jesiv, I really appreciate you sharing your experiences with your Boxsters & your helpful replies, I'm new to this Porsche Boxster experience, but really enjoy driving this car & want to maintain it (especially while replacing the intermediary bearing) to try to help prevent costly repairs in the future if possible. Great fun ! Thx again !
