Water Pump 986
Guys, some help please. Need to remove passenger seat and replace the water pump, serpentine belt and gaskets.
I've seen the DIY. Any advice on removing the seat and how difficult this all will be? Thanks. |

While in there I recomend putting in the LN engineering low temp thermostat or the insert. Peace of cake to do. Make sure you get all the air pockets out of it when refilling the fluid. Randy

hmmm, cant say that ive seen the DIY, but I would think you would not need to remove the seat?
just the access panel, and for that you just need to move the seat forwad and tip the seat back forward. should be straightforward after that... |

easy peasy to do the water pump....
pull carpet off wall....(there are 4 plastic screws under the edge under top carpet) remove access panel behind seats (2 10mm nuts and 7 10mm bolts) remove serpentine belt w 24mm on tension pulley drain coolant, replace crush washer on drain. you'll need to remove the hose and the 10mm bolts which hold the pump on, note there are 2 bolts for the pump which are slightly longer, note which holes they are in (one on left one on right). snip the pump gasket in the 3 small parts which connect it to front of the other housing next to the pump, use good side cutters..... install new gasket and pump in reverse order, torque to spec..... put everything back together..... ideally you want to vacuum fill the system to add coolant, don't forget to flip up the vent tab on the resivoir when you first bring it up to temp to bleed the system......

Its easier to replace from underneath the car..... if you haven't replaced the front mount now is a good time.

after you lower the engine about 4"....Once the Front Engine Mount is out, you will be able to remove the 7 bolts (10 mm hex) that fasten the water pump in place. Keep track of where the bolts go, because some are a bit longer than others.

Sorry, but that wasn't clear in your post. RE: replacing motor mount and pump at the same time.

This worked for me when bleeding, after replacing the pump and fitting LN low temp thermostat.
Started the car and let run for 30secs to burp. Turned off and squeezed under body hoses. Topped up coolant. Started and ran for 2 mins with bleeder opened, did the same as before. Topped up. Started and ran for 5 mins, took car for 1/2 hr drive with bleeder open after running at 2000rpm and confirming thermostat had opened and fans came on. Left overnight, close bleeder topped up and monitored temp for next few drives. The temp was running at the normal position, not the lower temp. Guessed there was trapped air and opened the bleeder and took car for another 1/2 hr drive. Closed bleeder and all good now. Runs at 80deg C. Be careful with the bleeding. A vacuum bleeder is preferred and easy to obtain in the USA. Not so easy to find Down Under. ![]() Tip. Have the new pump handy and as you remove the old bolts, place them in the corresponding hole in the new. That way you will get the correct bolt lengths when fitting new pump. oh....and yes it is easier from underneath, no need to partially drop the engine, you just need the correct length 10mm socket/ratchet combo.....i kinda typed that fast...some of the” details”i didn't type are common sense...
I can do a boxster water pump/thermostat in less than 2 hours....have probably done 20-30 over the past 2 years
