OK, I apparently combined two stupid things into one REALLY stupid thing.
First, I bought a cheap torque wrench (OK.....third stupid thing: I TRUSTED it!). Second, I am using a steel magnetic drain plug. Put the two together....and I have aluminum threads in my hand that used to hold the drain plug in the bottom on the engine. :roll eyes: Before starting, I checked my 101Projects book & had the 37 ft-lb setting; actually I still had the wrench set on the 19 ft-lb setting from the filter replacement so I know the wrench is useless. Again, I don't blame it as much as I blame myself for trusting a cheap tool. Even so, I am thinking these threads may have been over-torqued & weakened in the past. OK, is it new sump plate time? (And is this the one I need? 996-107-031-58-M100) If so, do I do the Deep Sump Kit? I'm only likely to street this car, maybe the track on Pedro's Blue Ridge Boxster Summit one of these summers but..... Is there another option? I know there must be a bunch of used ones out there with all the engines that have died an ugly death but do I trust threads that may have been over-tightened in the past (as these may have been)?

If you want to go to the LN 1/2 quart spacer kit I can sell you a new kit & clean used sump plate for $360 shipped. PM me & I can ship same day.
I would replace the sump plate because you don't want a leak there. |

With so many busted engines about, I'm sure you can find a good used cover for cheap. I think a new one from us is less than $200.

I sent a question to your staff about the "Brey-Krause Deep Sump Oil Pan Kit" wondering if that would completely replace my sump cover. For an extra $100, it might be worth it, even though I probably won't be doing high-G tracking. The Blue Ridge Parkway is about it for me! Unless I can buy a used one from someone here (that can vouch for how it has been torqued!), I don't think I'm going to go used.

I favor the X51 pan or LN deep sump over the BK extension for track use. A street car on street tires will probably be fine with a stock pan.

Why not just install a Time-Sert? 10 minute repair.

As easy as that sounds, I've never used them. I really don't want to 'learn from my mistakes' on this car!
I ordered the stock cover from Pelican last night & paid for Next Day. The deep sump kits all need the stock cover anyway so....the stock cover is good. I have a line on a SnapOn torque wrench that will take care of the rest! Thanks all!

101Projects nor Bentley has the torque specs for the bolts that hold the sump cover on. I found 7.5 ft-lbs here:
http://www.bkauto.com/porsche/instructions/R9095.pdf Anyone know if they are correct? Or if it's different without the deep sump kit?

They should be correct at about 8 ft-lbs. That's correct for that sized screw in aluminum.
