996 gauge cluster to Boxster
I'm going brain dead trying to figure this out. I purchased off eBay a 996 instrument cluster that was suppose to be compatible to my 2000 Boxster S. On the auction it showed a 175 MPH gauge. What arrived was a 200 MPH gauge, part number is 996 641 223 00 70 C. Reading all the info on swapping this over doesn't tell me what I have or if it's going to work or not.
Any help? ![]()

the "brains" that drive the speedo are inside the cluster itself, so the 200 mph speed won't be a problem

Okay, firstly check out my article here:
Pelican Technical Article: Boxster 996 Gauge Cluster Upgrade - 986 Boxster (1997-04) - Secondly, that's an old part number. That has been superseded to 9966412230370C, which corresponds to a 2002 and later cluster with the M249 package (Tiptronic transmission). If I were to guess, that unit is not compatible with your car - I don't even think it will have the same / proper connectors? -Wayne

Thanks Wayne. Took a look at the article and the connectors for the early model on the unit I have are green, blue, and gray connectors; not the blue, white, and black you note. Interestingly it does not have the lights for the tiptronic gear indicators.

Wayne: Is there a web site were I can enter part numbers to find out where these gauge clusters came from?

I did return the cluster and purchased another this week. The connectors are the right color but I did run into some issues. First, the cruise control light didn't come on and the blinkers weren't working properly. I swapped the LCD/circuit boards around, so the mileage was correct, but that gave me the issue of the volt gauge not working. Not sure if the second cluster has issues or if its not compatible.

Figured out the flasher/blinker issue was related to the hazard switch. I must have damaged it when taking the cluster out. I replaced it and no issues now. As for the cruise control, the light doesn't come on but it still works. This must be some of the programing that is mentioned in the article.
