97 Boxster Engine Conversion
I have been reading through the posts and instructions on doing engine conversions for the boxster and I am a little confused on how new of a 996 motor I can install into my 97 boxster. Can I go with a 2002 motor or can I only go to a 99 yr 996 motor? I am trying to do all my research and learn as much as I can before I decide to do this project or decide if Im better off selling the car and getting a newer 911. Any help would be appreciated, I have only had my car since September of 2012, it has 114k miles and stills runs great just wish I had more power. I am also looking for door hinges to get rid of my suicide doors that I cant stand on my boxster.
Thanks Jason ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The best engine for your application is in the Jan classified thread at the top of this page
Any 99-2001 3.4 996 engine is a fairly simple install allowing you to remap your original DME computer for the bigger engine. However some of the early 97 Boxster DME's CANNOT be reprogramed. If your car has one of these DME's you will need to get a 97-99 DME that can be programmed to the 99 996 map. |

Is there a way to find out which DME I have? And does the 101 Projects book describe how to remap the DME for this conversion?

Softronics is a good source for DME programming. You also need the programming codes which the Porsche dealers can access. The 101 book says to remap but you need your cars codes & the equipment to remap.
