IMS bearing extracted

2001 boxster s with 35000 miles. Oil changes done at 13000 in 2005 and 24000 miles in 2009 and again at 30000 in 2011. I did it when i bought it 4 months ago with 34000 miles. Bearing came out with no problem. It was a dual row bearing in perfect conditon with the seal intact. RMS was leaking a little as was the intermediate shaft seal so all that is being addressed along with a clutch since we are right there even though the one in it is still really good. All in all a totally unnecessary job but I don't regret doing it as I now have the RMS/IMS/clutch issue behind me and c`an finally have some piece of mind about not owning a blown motor. I feel lucky it is a dual row since the upgraded dual row bearing is best.

Good job! When you say the bearing was in perfect condition, did you take the seal off to inspect inside? Was there any grease left? If you read Jake's comments or visit Flatsix Innovations, they will say that when the grease is gone and you are lubing a sealed bearing with just oil, you are already in an early (phase 1) stage of failure. So even when it looks good, as mine did with twice your miles, I too am very happy to have reset the clock on the seemingly, most vulnerable part of the car.

Smile Job done

All in all it cost me $2900 to have RMS/upgraded ceramic IMS and a new clutch disc and pressure plate. A lot of money to spend, but I am glad I did it and no longer have to worry over the ims ruining my motor. I plan on keeping this car a long time and just felt the risk was for me too high as I would be unable to afford a new motor. I got lucky in that my bearing was still in great shape and it was a double row bearing.

IMS change-out

I have a 2001` "S", with 76,000 miles on the original bearing. Is it a mistake to not use the LN?
