Question For those who fixed the notchy shifter

Just curious what did you do to fix it? I've read many times remedies of replacing Transmition mounts, motor mounts, fluid change, etc. I've changed the tranny fluid with swepco recommended here. Problem has worsened. While warming the car up in the driveway. I'll depress the clutch and run through the gears smoothly. But as soon as tires roll, forward or reverse, the shifter gets very knotchly, almost stubborn. I can hear a loud click from outside the car as I shift from 1st to 2nd. Interesting, when the car is run for over a 1/2 hours things are much smoother again. I liked to hear any success stories and tips regarding what I should look at.

Thank you

I don't know of any fix for the stiff shifting, but FWIW, mine too gets much smoother once the engine warms up a bit.

notchy shifter no more

What I was told to do is just before shifting put pressure on the shifter towards the gear you are wanting to go for. For me the problem was first to second. You will feel a little gap there hold the pressure there and as you put the clutch pedal in to shift, the shifter will slide right in with no notchy feel. Works for me

on my 99 I replaced mounts, used PORSCHE fluid (made a huge difference), and installed a 997 shifter which shortened the throws.

Thank you. I was think of exactly what you did. Which shifter did you go with? Was it the 997 shift console upgrade or short shift kit? Also, the Transmition mounts or engine mounts?

Side note. I'm wondering if a simple cable adjustment would do it?

I replaced all the mounts. The car had 150K on the trans mounts and they were shot, the motor mount in front had also torn but it had been replaced ~80K.

I purchased the 997 shifter assembly, if you do a search on line you will see the replacment process (very easy just fiddly because you have to disassemble the center console). While I had everything apart I also did the GT3 upgrade and took out the silly center console in front of the gear shift and it really opened up the interior, if you have legroom issues this is a must. I wish I would have done the upgrade years earlier.

oh and if you do the trans mounts look at the 101 projects book and just replace the hydrolic part of the mounts don't buy the whole Porsche mount as it costs $$$$$
