Quick question sir, I recently purchased a 98 boxter w 85 thousand miles at first typical symptoms described herein , the man I purchased the car from told me about the o2 sensor being bad I kept driving the car the condition progressively worsened to the point of not running well enough to drive it at all is that typical ????

The problem you describe could be the oxygen sensor or sensors or another copmponent that controls the fuel mixture. I would recommend having your engine scanned for fault codes first.
