Question on front tire wear: do I need an alignment?

I bought my '01 Boxster S with Michelin Pilot Sports on the front & newer Pilots on the rear. The fronts had many miles on them already but had good tread. Since then, I've added another 16,000 miles to them. I just noticed the inner edges are wearing; badly on the passenger side, & less so on the driver's side but still only on the inner edge.
The rears still have great tread on them.
From reading many posts here, it seems like I got more than expected out of these tires, maybe twice what many are getting (since I'm guessing the fronts have between 25,000-40,000 miles on them). That being said, does the inner wear indicate either:
1. a likely worn front-end component? or
2. just in need of an alignment? or
3. neither, just new front tires?

Additional info:
-Fronts just started showing age/sun cracks recently. Perhaps the cracking rubber accelerated the wear but the inner edges wouldn't see as much sun as the outer edges obviously, so this is probably not relevant. They need to be replaced regardless.
-car had 81k when purchased 1.5 years ago, now has 97k.
-car does not pull to either side; drives straight & true even with no hands at highway speed (not that I do that very often!).
-Pass side (bad inner wear, breaking through the top rubber compound) is smooth, not cupped or scalloped. Driver's side (close to wearing through but not there yet) has slight cupping/scalloping. It's not felt in steering wheel or in the ride, tho.
-Stock suspension as far as I know & likely original shocks, etc.
-pouring rain right now so no pics yet.
I was looking at getting new Pilots as my primary choice & then saw this thread:

Seems like a fairly popular choice...

Thanks!

You are already getting very good tire wear. You must drive a lot of hwy miles which tend to wear the inside edges. My tires tend to wear more on the outside edges. Have an alignment done with your next set of tires and ask for zero front toe and possibly less negative camber due to current inside tire wear issues. This should better suit your driving habits.

That's not a bad idea at all.
This is my DD & I don't track it at all. I do try to get into some corners for fun on the weekends (there are some great back roads around here!) but the majority is highway.
