Transmission shifter solenoid circuit malfunction?

My 2004 986 is showing the "Check Engine Light" and a rocking, rotating light runs back and forth between high and low gears dash display. This is an automatic transmission. An engine sensor read out says "Transmission shifter solenoid circuit malfunction". I cannot find anything on line about repairing this. Does anyone have a clue please?

The water pump went out and we replaced it and the thermostat. We are thinking possibly the water pump blew coolant into the shifting mechanism causing the solenoid issue.

Question

I was wondering if you ever fixed or solved that problem?? I have the same problem that I thought I had figured out but not so lucky after all. Apparently the tranny will not downshift during this toggle.wen braking. Tranny shifts fine up,rpm fine and just never know what gear your in. Next I will change out the downshift solenoid unless someone says otherwise,

JFP, my check engine lt.has not come on so no codes. I do not have a Durametric software test tool. RandyB561 seems to have same problem. I changed out the plug boot on cyl 1 (bad) and the problem went away for several months. Thought it might have been stray voltage going to ground. Toggle came back so changed out other 5 and toggle went away forabout 50 miles driving car and is now mostly toggling all the time. Goes nornal from time to time. Even toggles in manual mode. Cleaned center console completely and checked linkage and does not look any problem there. I'm thinking it is the downshift solenoid as the tranny will not downshift normal? any Ideas?

JFP Last year when I got the car back from my daughter there were no codes and the toggle was intermittant as it did not start that toggle again until I was on the freeway. The only time I ever got a code was after fuid change out and new plugs and changed the cv joints as well. The toggle went away for a few miles, about 10 miles on the road the toggle returned so changed out #1 cyl plug boot as it looked bad and I got the only code of a missfire #1 cyl. When I did that, the toggle went away. Several hundred miles later the toggle returned,no codes.Changed out the rest of the plug boots and toggle went away but returned after about 50 miles on the road, no codes. Toggle goes away for a bit while driving but comes back. Could be the circuit, plug wires or the solenoid is my best guess.Any help is appeciated. Thanks for your response

The fact that the transmission acts weird when the display is lit says there is something wrong. You need to get the car scanned with a Porsche specific system (Durametric, PIWIS, PST II) as many aftermarket or cheap OBD II scanners cannot see the Tip at all.
