Ignition Switch Questions

After reading through Project 86 & several threads on topic, I still have a couple questions. (I posted them here but figured putting it in the main forum might get more responses)
Here's my situation: '01 S & I don't believe I have the upgraded mechanism. Yesterday, my key was tough to get into the slot. When in, it turned & the car started but the spring didn't pull it back from 'Start' to 'Run' like it had before. Also, when shut off, I had to hold it all the way to the detent that allows the key to be removed (& the electronics to shut off). It's like the springs let loose & the detents are off.
Are the springs & detent mechanisms in the replaceable portion of the old mechanism (Part # 4A0-905-849-B-M56 on Pelican)? Or are they in the main mechanism meaning that I need to replace the whole thing?
Either way, it appears to me that I can reuse the existing tumbler & keys...correct?
Thanks!

hi there,

this is what happened to my 99. do all your electronics work? I was able to just replace the switch and it took about an hour.

Yes, everything electrical is working as it should. It's just the springing isn't correct & the clicks aren't right.

I've had the same issue with my switch but it also didn't shut off my car when I took the key out, you can still reuse the tumbler and keys. I just got my switch at Autozone for around $25( with employee discount) it was locally here. installed it and it works like a charm! Plus lifetime warranty, can't beat that! But if you want to go OEM I'd go with what they have here.

We need the car this weekend (my son is getting married!) so I checked my local Autozone; they STOCK the switch! $39 (not an employee) so it was more than here on Pelican but I installed it in about 30 minutes when I got home & it's perfect!
I think I'll order one here as well & keep it in the frunk for when this one dies!
The little screwdriver from my Craftsmen set worked great to undo the set screws & my 'head-light' (forehead-mounted LED flashlight) made it possible for me to see!
