Code 1531

I just got my new (to me) '99 Boxster on the road. It runs great, but 2 of the last 3 times the CEL has turned on. It shows a code 1531. I understand that this can be the Variocam solenoid and actuator, but the car shows no symptoms. It runs strong and idles smoothly.

Any suggestions? Is it more likely that it needs the solenoid/ actuator replaced or does the fact that there are no other symptoms point to connectors, wiring, etc.?

The first two suspects they list for 1531 are wiring related

– Open circuit
– Open circuit, B+ supply
– Actuator defective

and the first thing they suggest after some specific tests you may not have the tools or docs for is "check wiring harness for chafing and pinching damage".

Is there any risk in driving the car with this code? I really needed to take a trip (430 mi.) with it this weekend, but will postpone if the code might cause any difficulties.
