Loud engine knock beginning at 1200 rpm

This is my first post. Just bought . 2000 Boxster with IMS issues.I just finished the replacement. At start up no issues. Test drive no issue until 1500 rpm.then a knock. Under this rpm nothing, over a knock.
This is coming from the bottom of the motor. Increases as rpm increases. Called the past owner he said that when he removed the oil pan he found lots of metal. He believed it was the IMS bearing. It may not have been all the issues.
Any insights

Stan

Sounds more like a rod bearing failure than an IMS; when the IMS lets go, the engine cannot run.

You need to plan on either a totally rebuild or a replacement engine.

Rebuilding an M96 requires both a significant number of special tools and quite a bit of specific knowledge as well, and can easily go north of $10K, so it is best left to the pros.

A bone yard engine will cost in the $5-7K range depending upon miles, etc.

If it is a rebuilder, reputation matters. Ask for any experiences in the forums and search online. You want a happy experience.

Check out Jake Raby, if your engine is rebuildable, he can build and install an excellent engine with all the factory issues engineered out. Builds out engines to 3.4 or 3.8 liters

Will be dropping the engine this weekend.

This is the smart move. Once the IMS bearing fails and metal flakes enter the oil circulation system, it is unwise to just try to flush the engine and replace parts. That engine, from and economic stand point, is junk.

09/08/2013 engine swap completed. Did however have to move parts from my 2000 engine to the 2001 engine. Cars runs wonderfully. I did over fill the oil sump. It keeps throwing the check engine light. Hopefully this will clear up.

Jake does a 3.8 direct swap? That would be sweet. I am sure the price is not so sweet but interesting. New Boxsters are not being given away either.

There is a 2001 direct swap in the classified thread at the top of this page.
