Engine Swap in 996

I have a 2000 C4 that needs a new motor. As most of you will know this year has the M96.04 e-gas motor in it.

Finding used engines is pretty hit and miss, but I've got a line on a reliable source for a 3.4 out of a '99 C2 which has the M96.01 in it, which of course is non-e-gas.

Short of swapping throttle bodies, does anybody know of any compatibility issues (DME, o2, SAI, etc) going this route?

Thank you!

Maybe another question to ask is could you swap all the auxiliaries including the heads from the old engine to the new block. Where is there damage on the original?

The accessories are salvageable. The heads are not.

If you don't buy the 3/4 996 engine let me know I would be interested for Boxster conversion. If anyone knows of a 3.4 996 engine available let me know.

I believe you will want to put both engines side by side & swap everything that bolts to the top of the C4 engine onto the replacement engine. I don't think the 1999s had SAI so that may be optional for you. Just compare the 2 & make the new engine look like your original. Heads down should be identical.

It looks like the '99 3.4 M96.01 does have SAI, but there was an improvement in design for the M96.04. My only major concern is DME compatibility. I'm trying to find out if the M96.04 has the same 5.2.2 DME that the M96.01 has. It looks like Porsche didn't switch to the 7.2 DME until 2003. But, I keep getting conflicting info.

99 uses 5.2 unless it is a C4 which requires 7.2 DME to control E-gas &PSM

2000-2001 uses 7.2 DME

2002 uses 7.8 to control VarioCam +

Awesome! Thank you prodriver.

Given this, if I were to go with this M96.01, the 7.2 in mine wouldn't run this engine?

Or, is it only the other way around (5.2.2 --> M96.04)

Do the above & don't tell the car you have swaped the longblock & it will never know.
