Transmission cable break

About a week ago I was going around a corner, went to shift gears and hear a pop and the shifter went limp on my 06 Boxster. I had it towed to the dealer to figure out what went wrong. A few days later the service manager called and said the transmission cable broke. He said it had most likely been damaged by somebody working on the car. I'm the only one who has done work on that car so he was essentially blaming me. A couple days ago I spoke to the mechanic who is actually doing the work and he said this is not the first car they have seen with this problem and it is a design issue of how the cable is routed and it gets kinked and eventually breaks.

I'm just wondering how common this issue is. Anybody else have their transmission cable break? They are describing it as a transmission cable. Is it actually like a shift linkage cable?

It's becoming more common. A company made stronger cables but they have not been out long. Numeric Racing Quality Racing Products

I had the same thing happen on my 03, back about 5 years ago. The actual failure was the bracket at the top of the trans. I was told that the replacement part was an "improved design". So far, so good.
