whining sound at idel

Ive noticed a bit a whine from the front of the engine in my 2000 boxster at idle. The car has around 105,000 on it. The sound goes away with an increase in rpms.

I'm assuming, or hoping its just an roller pulley or idler pulley, or whatever they call the rollers that guide the serpentine belt.

Is this reasonable? Is 105,000 about the life for them? I see there are three, I'm thinking just replace them all and put in a new belt while I'm there.

Anything else to check?

Sounds about like what my water pump sounded like, at about the mileage it sounded like it.

Water pump was replaced at 95000 or so.

Turn off the A/C and see if it goes away. Maybe one of the fans.

+1 on water pump because it can be really costly if it fails - overheating, impeller pieces scattered throughout the cooling system, etc.

While the whine may be caused by something else, it's a smart move to replace the water pump at your mileage. It's living on borrowed time.
