Door locks acting up

Hi everyone, I've posted this over at the 986 forum as well but maybe someone here can help me out. I think my driver's side door locking mechanism is bad but before I buy a new one I'd like to run the symptoms by you all and see if you concur.

The PO never used the fob to lock or unlock and I rarely use it. Eventually the key would not lock or unlock the car. No other odd behavior, just silence. The fob does still lock and unlock the doors with no other odd behavior but once locked the battery drains in a couple of days. If I leave everything unlocked the battery doesn't drain. My thinking is that the micro switch that the key works is dead and when the car is locked something is shorting internally in that switch to drain the battery. Sound logical? Thanks for any help on this.
