Canadian/American cars
As a potential new owner, I am looking at the 97,98,99 Boxster. I live it Toronto, I see some cheaper boxsters online but they are all American imported cars. Is there any issues with American cars, Obviously at this age there are no warranties etc.

The prices are less because there are more cars here. If you mean issues importing, that also is not difficult.

Are you talking about buying a US car that is already in Canada?
If yes, I would not think so as they have been "Canadianized" if it was imported legally. Have a look of Importing a Porsche from the US into Canada it will give one info of what the car go through before being plated here.

I bought a 98 in Tacoma 2 years ago
importing was easy daylight running lights and an inspection plus pay the taxes of course save prob 4 grand over the whole thing There are a few changes since the how to import thread was posted most significant is you can now do all the American part on line( they prefer it this way) I have also been told recently there is some sort of exporter guarantor form required Don't know much about this as its a new one?? http://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/export-docs/motor-vehicle ![]() Last edited by black98; 09-07-2014 at 08:15 AM.. |

There is a small independent used car dealership. Selling an American Boxster, it was imported into canada 2008. It has all the proper paper. its a 1998. They cannot provide any service history. Whenever I see cars that are brought up from the states, they are usually a few thousand less than a Canadian car.
I with other cars, there were issues at dealerships getting the cars covered under warranty when they were imported. Because this car is loooong past warranty is there anything else I have to be carful of? |

Not really,
It is cheaper because who ever brought it here, paid a lot less than those already here. Back in those years, Porsche Canada had a pretty bad $ conversion policy as it was dictated by the US dollar. So if you compare apple to apple but bought in different country that was later imported when the Canadian $ was doing better, you got a deal. Get a PPI and away you go.

Get a PPI and make sure you have them check the coolant tank for leaks. Check the oil and coolant for mixing. Make sure both cooling fans up front are working. (turn on the a/c and go up front and listen at the corners) Check the bottom of the trans for oil. Could be rear seal. The 98's had a double row IMS bearing. I have a 98, first thing I did was change the bearing. My car had 69k miles and the bearing had no grease left in it but did not yet start to pit. Factor in IMS and clutch kit into your negotiation and try and get the best deal. They drive the car and smile.
