Transmission noise

08 CS with 85k on it.

The other day the transmission started to make a spinning noise when in gear at low rpm and low load (very light throttle). As soon as there is load put on the transmission the spinning noise stops.

While stationary and the engine running with the clutch depressed the transmission sounds like a box of rocks. It has always had a slight rattle but now its really bad.

All of this gets worse with heat.

Shifting has not been affected.

Any thoughts?

I would Imediatly drain the fluid and check for any metal to rule out an internal problem.....
but it sounds like it could be the release bearing failing.....
When the clutch is not pressed the release bearing has no load so if it's failing it'll whine/squeal......if the release bearing is extremely bad then it will also make noise when depressed......
If there is an internal problem with the trans then the fluid will most likely have metal chunks /flakes in it......if that's causing the marble sound.....but I'm leaning towards the release bearing....
85k is around when the clutch will have lots of wear depending on how is been driven, only way to confirm the release bearing it to pull the trans......so plan on changing the clutch.
Wouldn't be a bad time to get fresh great oil in it too if it's never been changed.....

Thanks for the reply.

No noise when the clutch pedal is pressed. All the rattling happens when sitting still and with the pedal out.

I replaced the fluid at 45k and again about 3 months ago. I'll try to pull some fluid to see.

There is a known issue with a sealed bearing in the gearbox. A good Boxster mechanic would be familiar with this and would be able to quickly diagnose it. As mentioned ,it is about time(?) for clutch and DMF check.IMS bearing /RMS check would be a good idea too.Just search here for the details.

Do you know which sealed bearing?

85k getting towards the end of life on the clutch? I had a Toyota Corolla with 185k and the clutch was perfect. I can't image having to replace a clutch so soon. Are they made inferior to other vehicles?

The clutches wear more on these cars and 911s due to the nature of the beasts....mid/rear engine. ...more traction. ..etc....
I'm still leaning towards the release bearing.......i wouldn't drain the fluid just yet.....

I had a mercedes c320 with a 6 speed ZF manual tranny, it started making a rattling noise when not in gear and the clutch out. I took it to an independent shop and had them change the clutch. Got it back and it still made the noise, they told me it needed a new tranny. I decided to take it to the dealer for a 2nd opinion, they told me the same thing, but the funny thing was that after I got it back it never made that noise again.

I talked to a Porsche transmission shop today. They suspect it is the pinion bearing going bad. This is common I was told with these transmissions and the best part is that that bearing is the same type and this will happen again down the road.

So.... I want to look at a few other transmission options. I know with Jeeps you can mate other transmissions up with an adapter plate.

Any thoughts on a strong transmission to go with? I was thinking GT3 but was told that is 12k...Yikes!!!

Going to drain the fluid still and see as soon as it gets here.
