How to check IMS bearing in 2000 Boxster S

i've search for several minutes and hope someone can post a link to a thread that describes how to check my IMS bearing.

I'm sure this has been posted many times and I apologize for not finding it.

Chris

Durametric software scan to look for large scale cam deviations.
Do an oil change and look in the filter for any metal.
Pull the oil pan and look for more metal.

Pull the transmission and pull the IMS cover off (please follow the procedures for this, don't just remove the cover. Lock the engine at TDC, relieve cam chain tensioners, etc).

Best of luck. I didn't have the Durametric software and my car ran perfectly with no rattling noises. However when I did an oil change I found a small amount of metal. My bearing turned out to be failing.

QUOTE]

At best, a Durametric scan may indicate a failing IMSB. Bring the engine up to operating temperature. Next, check the camshaft deviations. They should be rock solid steady. If they wobble, this could be an indication that the IMSB is failing.

The size of the camshaft deviation is an indication something else is going on. For example, they could change over time as the variocam pads wear. Anything between +6 and -6 is within factory limits.

Again, its the second to second changes in camshaft deviation values that may indicate a IMSB problem not how large or small they are.

Here is a different idea.
Fit an IMS guardian LN Engineering .Pelican sells it.
While you are at it, inspect the inside of the oil filter pleats. If you find anything alarming, drop the pan and inspect.
Consider a full flow LN Filter adapter.
Remember there are at least 29 other Modes of failure than just IMS !Look for those also?
