Question on IMS Bearing Replacement

Have 2001 Boxster 2.7 94,000 miles with original clutch and dual row IMS bearing with no noise or indicated problems, however, intend to replace it when I do the clutch soon. Would like to use the Pelican Parts update kit(PEL-IMS-1) and the LN installation tool kit (LN-101-08-13) for the job. Have read the Pelican directions in Wayne's 101 Projects book and the LN instructions on their web site and many of these posts, but have read conflicting information if cams need to be locked before removing the IMS bearing when using the Pelican kit on a 5 chain motor.

In the instructions in Wayne's book for the Pelican kit there is no mention of locking the cams on the 5 chain motor with a locking tool - is this necessary or not? If cams should be locked please explain the procedure how is it done since the motor must be rotated to line up the correct position for the set screws, which would leave it off TDC. Thanks

Rotate motor to TDC and lock the cams to avoid a giant can-o worms that has devoured many motors.

Couple of critical points: Forget about any instructions other than LN Engineering. Far too many people have tried other methods and gotten into dire trouble as the direct result. I would also forget about any replacement bearing other than LN's as well. When you cheap out on this refit, you get exactly what you paid for......

Got an off line reply from Wayne -"Hi there. If the set screws are installed properly, they will lock the chain and the cams together. You do not need to lock the cams with the tool, but I do recommend that you remove the green plugs and check the cam timing when the procedure is done, "just in case". It's unlikely that a 5-chain motor will skip a tooth during this procedure, but if it were my car, I would check just to make sure".

Good enough for me.

Then I wish you luck, because you are going to need it......................

I shall take no comfort in reading the disaster that probably follows. So cheap and easy to use the correct tool. So expensive if it moves while working on it w/o the cam locks.
here is a preview of the blood fest that may follow from this very Forum:

If you are a cheap skate ,it is easy to make the tool. But why? Buy from Pelican and resell when you are done.
JFP - you have been endlessly patient on this subject. Before you get burned out, may I invite you to simply copy & paste this post to all other similar inquiries ?

Talking Skinning the cat

IF it fits, it fits, if it hits, it hits. Buying somebody's tools does not guarantee you will do the job correctly anymore than making your own guarantees you will fail. To quote Dirty Harry, "a man's gotta know his limitations". Most important is understanding the procedure, the results of wrongly timed actions and knowing how to proceed cautiously and double check your own work.
I think there's a youtube video showing a man who can skin a deer in 2 minutes. It's about a 45 minute job for me, at minimum. To each his own. An ephiphany can occur to anyone at anytime, about anything. We just hope it's not after his engine is reduced to a smoldering pile of clanking scrap metal.

Best wishes to you DHI1532

Please don't be stupid. Crank to TDC and cam lock's in. Period. You really don't have to spend much time "googling" to find out this is the only way. Don't led ANYBODY tell you otherwise and don't play Russian roulette with your car.
