Do ALL Boxster have potential IMS failure?
Is every year of the Boxster prone to the IMS failure? Is there one year safer to buy than another? I've heard that 1997 was ok...true/false?

Generally, the 97 thru 99s had a better bearing than the 2000s thru 2004.5s but there is a trade off in age and wear for a car that old that hasn't been maintained fanatically. And you have no way of telling exactly which bearing design is in there especially in the switch over years without removing the transmission and inspecting.
I'd wager the probability of a major failure from another cause outweighs the probability of the IMS failing. Remember, there are hundreds of parts in an engine, lots of them rubbing against another. Even if each of those parts has a one hundredth as much chance of failure as the IMS, cumulatively the chances add up. Get to 2009 and you have no IMS in the engine. If it worries you, budget for it, find a mechanic with lots of experience doing the IMS swap and select a good replacement part. There are cars with 300k on their worst design IMS. |
