To Down shift or Not To Down Shift
I recently read a post were a gentleman described that he would rather use his brakes then to down shift because it is cheaper to replace brake pads than a clutch.
Here is my thought, there is nothing more exhilarating than going in to a turn and listening to the exhaust notes as the car gently gears down.. Any Thoughts.. Bflaggs |
Done right there is almost zero clutch wear (other then the movement of release mechanisms .
Trouble is -most people have no clue anymore how to dwn shift. (double clutch ) They do not come off the farm or have not ever drove a big trk. As you go through neutral is best to lift the clutch slightly to engage main shaft as you rev engine to match next lower gear. Done right with practice its is a fluid action . There is no jerking of drive train or shock value to it. If you are really good you use no clutch action at all .(dont try this unless you have a good idea of moving parts and noises.) It is much more EZ with larger gears and transmissions, the smaller the more difficult.(to use no clutch action ) |
