Hi - I currently own a 2005 987 boxster base with tiptronic 90,000 kms and am experiencing really hard upshift from 2nd to 3rd gear. Could you advise what the potential issue is?
Also, is my likely to have the IMS issue?
Thanks!

Hello! When did the hard upshift start? Did it just happen overnight? Was the cars battery replaced? Sometimes what can happen is the Tiptronic control unit can lose it's shift adaptation. The first thing I would try is to have someone with a PIWIS check faults, and reset the transmission adaptations. Then drive the car gently while the car is being adapted. There is a procedure that the shop should know where you gently accelerate to 60 MPH without going over 2500 RPM, then gently brake back down to 0 MPH. Pause and repeat that process 5 times.
As for the IMS bearing issue, yes unfortunately many cars do have the IMS issue, and keeping your oil changed and looking for metal debris on the oil filter and on the magnetic drain plug is the best way to keep an eye on the IMS Bearing. Some cars go 175K with no issues some don't make it to 30K without having an issue. A lot has to do with your maintenance schedule and how you drive the car. The harder the better is what we have found.
