Hi Casey, Many thanks and very useful articles. One further question - does a 987 Boxster automatically have an M97 engine or, given that the 987 was introduced in 2005 and the M97 engine in 2006, is it only the 3.4l engine that is an M97? and/or can you tell from the engine number?

In short I do not know, but what I can tell you is some 3.4L 997s were M96, most if not every 2005 Boxster I saw were M96, and some 3.8L 2005 Carrera S were M96. Assuming that the engine was never replaced under warranty. I have seen 2001 Carrera's with M97 IMS Bearings installed because at the time the engine was replaced all the remanufactured engines from Porsche received the newest style bearing available. Those odd balls kind of bucked the rules, but generally speaking most everything before 2006 with the original engine installed has the replaceable IMS Bearing.
