Hi Nick, are the non serviceable IMS bearing released in 2006 as problematic as the single row bearings? And does the Gen 2 motor released in 2009 also have IMS problems?

I'm going to help Nick out on this one. I worked at a shop that did many many many IMS bearings, and we never personally saw one 2006-2008 car with a failed bearing, so my personal experience says that the 2006 is less problematic. One safeguard you can do to those engines is to open up the IMS bearing end cap, and remove the grease seal on the bearing so that the bearing can be cleaned and lubricated with engine oil rather than relying on the grease from when the bearing was manufactured.
Here is a good article from my friend Tony Callas. http://www.callasrennsport.com/living-m96-engine-ims/ Here is one that answers your last question: http://www.callasrennsport.com/996-vs-997-and-beyond/ - Casey |

The third generation large single row IMS bearing is replaceable. It is also the best of the three by a large amount.
Only problem is the labor cost to do it because the only replacement is a complete IMS shaft and bearing and to get the shaft out, you have to split the case and wait weeks for the turnaround for them to ship yours back. Last I checked with LN, sales of this manufactured IMS shaft and bearing with perhaps a dozen. |
