Hi, I'm Rickard from Sweden. Thanks for this excellent site, which has been very helpful.
I've got a 1997 Boxster which has had a completly broken convertible mechanism, including a left side broken pivot lever and broken balljoint attachment. both the plastic balljoints had been replaced by a pair made of stainless steel, not to be recommended, and yes, I know the fool who did it I have now repaired and aligned the complete mechanism, and it seems to work smooth mechanically, but I still have a problem with the electrical system. When I push the button to open the roof the top motor does not stop when the roof has reached its open end position, instead it reverses as the hatch microswitch is actuated. I have measured the microswitch during operation, and it works properly. Then I tried to disconnect the battery for a short while when the roof was in its open end position, and as I reconnect it again it works alright, i e the motor is no longer activated when I push the button to open. Then when I push the button to close the motor starts and works alright, but when it reaches the open end position the motor does not stop but again changes direction as the hatch microswitch is actuated. Disconnecting the battery for a short while makes it work alright again for the moment, but the problem is repeated every time the end open and close positons are reached. My conclusion is that there is some kind of problem with the top motor relay, or should I check for something else before i change it ? Have you installed the smart top relay? It could be a problem in the circuitry, if not I would suspect a wiring issue, or faulty hatch switch.
