How many track days before changing oil?
 

Hello guys & gals,
Quick question for you track junkies. How often do you change your oil relative to track day participation? I have a 2000 Boxster S with 41,700 miles on it and I'm running High Performance Royal Purple 10w40. I've completed two track weekends this Summer, approx. 8 hours of hard, high rev driving. I'm doing another one (my last this year) in October and wondering if I'm OK to go another 2 hours at the track and then change it before putting her in to sleep for the Winter.
By the way, I've only owned the car about a year now and won't even put 2K on the car this year.

It depends.

Most of the Spec race cars change it every weekend. I run about 20 DE days/yr and avoid super hot days or super extreme engine demands. We just do this for fun right? I change it every 6 months, 3k miles, or anytime the oil color begins to darken indicating contamination.

FWIW my last car had over 112k miles, 100 track days, around 250 track hours on the original 2.5L Boxster motor and compression still tested good when I sold her.

for race weekends it needs to be changed every weekend- oil is cheap vs rebuilds.

for DE's I change the oil every 3rd weekend if not every other weekend. 911 sc unopened bottom end with 178,XXX miles on it

If changing it frequently, and you are keeping records of use, you may want to send some samples out on occasion to test for engine issues. If you "feel" better changing it often, the go fore it. If you are being "cheap", well, then be prepared if things don't work out.

While oil is relatively cheap, the motors in these cars hit and miss under heavy track use. You hear of others that never change the oil and never have problems and others who over maintain and things go boom. Welcome to a possible crap shoot!

Thanks everyone for your advise. I think I'll change it every two or three DE weekends. I'm more on the cautious side.
Now I found out I have a cylinder head leaking oil so let the games begin!
