Transmission input shaft radial seal replacement?

Does anyone know the proper method for replacing the radial seal that goes in the transmission input shaft guide tube? Does it need to be greased first?

The seal looks like a smaller version of the RMS.

I wish I could help you because you helped me out a couple months ago. When I put mine in I just pressed it in with no grease. But I do not know whether that is proper or not.

I appreciate your gesture. I've been doing a lot of reading about oil seals this week. They are also called simmerrings and are made of many materials and there are different installation methods based on the material.

I did find an audi instruction manual that is the identical transmission that is in the Cayman S. It said to put a light film of gear oil on the outside diameter to ease fitting the seal and to cover 40% of the area between the seal lip and dust lip (this is the area that rides on the shaft) with grease.

I installed the seal yesterday. Time will tell.

Good to know. Thanks for that. I replaced mine last winter thinking its failure was the cause of some gear oil I was seeing on the transmission. I still have the problem. When I have the car up again this winter do you mind if I send you a couple pictures of the problem to get your thoughts?
