2014 Cayman S owner feedback wanted

Looking hard at a 2014, barely any miles, owner bought GT4. Nice S, PDK car.
Huge improvement over my 83 Sc and 95 993.
Any owners have an good and bad comments to share?
What about depreciation on these cars? How much should it have dropped in 2 model years? Original sticker was $79k.

I know the new water cooled cars are vastly different than my old school air cooled rides, but feeling the need for a little more creature comfort and performance as well.

Lets hear what experienced owners have to say. Thanks

Color, location, miles, options, season, certification, warranty, in-service-date, who is selling it. All affect prices.

Maybe $20-22k off list?

Well I took my 2010 Boxster PDK up the mountains today first serious drive since I purchased it and it was so much better than my previous 986 motor, gearbox and ride.
I think you have to ask yourself what do you want Nostalgia or comfort and performance.
When motor bikes wave you through to pass you know you have something special.

They are a blast to drive. List out all the options, $20k off list would a good deal, assuming low miles...

Interesting comparing the 2 vehicles. I bought a Cayman S new in 2006. It has 22K miles and is a pleasure to drive. I recently purchased an 83 911SC with 80K miles. in '06, I could have bought 4 immaculate SC's for what I paid for the Cayman. They would now be worth over $150K. I might be able to get $30K for the Cayman. On the other hand, other than tires & oil changes, I think the only non-routine maintenance I've done on the Cayman is replacing the battery. I then bought a Battery Tender to solve that.
In the couple of months I've had the SC I've spent about $5K on it. I love tinkering on it & that's largely why I bought it. The only way you can even SEE the engine in the Cayman is up on a rack. I wasn't sure if that would be an issue for someone who likes to tinker, but trust me, it IS an issue. If pure driving were the only consideration, the Cayman wins hands down. I have driven both a 2014 Cayman & Cayman S. Every year the technology & horsepower tick upward. I had a chance to talk to a guy who had just traded a 2007 Cayman S for a 2014. He said he missed the "07. His main reason was that he liked the size of the 986 over the larger 987. I don't plan on ever selling the Cayman. I would suggest the same regarding your SC.

$79,000 MSRP means it doesn't have much equipment. mine listed for $83M + the factory sport exhaust takes it to over $86,000. I will sell you mine in February for $62,000 and that includes Fabspeed exhaust headers and orginal ones, IPD intake plenum with 997 GTS 82 MIL Throttle Body. Guards Red with clear film on entire front. Perfect condition.

These are great cars. Selling also due to GT4 coming in April.

So as not to confuse things, Only Boxsters were 986's up to 2004. Boxster 987's started in '05 and then the '06-'12 Cayman and 'S' were all 987's as well. The '13 and up are 981's and the new 2017 models coming up next year will be 718's and flat 4 cylinder turbo's.
Hang on to the flat sixes!

Interesting comment. I've considered a Cayman (tinkerer as well) and the number one thing that bothers me is that you can't easily see the engine. I like the car but it is almost a deal breaker.

2015 C S. I just removed the interior plastic to install a Cantrell roll bar. Also removed the carpet and sound dampener in front and on top of the engine. Do not want to cut the panels and kind of like seeing the engineering. Now approx. 10 screws and you gain access. May put the engine cover carpet back, but it sides out easily.

Have you opened the engine lid on a new water cooled 911?

It's somewhere under all those plastic bits, but not really visible.

Interesting conversation. I have a number of classic and am considering the GT4 or maybe a used S. I drove the GT4 and I was blown away at what it can do. And sooo easy to drive. I have an a allocation so I am in the queue for a new GT4. I was considering the GT4 bc of the value it has to offer vs taking an S and then spending a bunch of money on it make it an GT4, which it would never be. But I too am concerned about new car boredom and value tanking after one year of ownership. But I have to say, this car is soooo much nicer to drive than my old cars. After driving it, there is such a difference it is hard to deny how good it is. My classic cars cost me $1000's very time they are in for service. Yes they appreciate in value, but... This car would have A/C and a new car warranty. Maybe the solution is to have one of each?

I just purchased a 2012 Cayman in Sydney Australia. 25,000 km's on the clock 19 inch wheels. Carrera White with black interior. What a weapon. Prior was a 993. Great car but costly to keep on the road even though I did 50% of the work myself. Was worried going from air cooled to water cooled but now I have settled in all is good. You will love a Cayman !!!

My 2009 Cayman S sticker was an eye-watering $102,000 sticker. It was a 2009 version 2 launch code car. I bought it CPO in 2014 with 7300 miles for $52,000. Don't get me wrong, it was an amazing car, but - there were 3 things that became deal breakers -

1) seat position - somewhat related to my size (and the 981 is more comfortable) but I could not get the seats far enough back, or the seat back itself angled back - never a problem in any year 911.

2) PDK is amazing - and somehow boring - I know it is the default on a serious track car, and I would cringe at buying an over - revved manual car - but pdk gets boring after a while - I still like to row.

3) the sound - again, I think the 981 pipes in the exhaust sound, or maybe autotunes it, but the combo of pdk and boring exhaust - I even added a Cayman R exhaust to try and improve (lost some torque along the way) It was not the true sound of a Porsche.

Not trying to be a dick - in fact 2009's may have bottomed on price and these will become sought after cars. No IMS BS, etc.

My dream 981 would be a manual S or higher version. Maybe Boxster or Spyder. Not for money value or investment. Just fun. Just sayin'

C&D, not clear, what is your current ride? Are you saying you were/are bored w the 2009 and would like to change to a new model w manual?

The more I look and study, the Cayman S is nice but lacks rawness/sportiness that gets better w the GTS but the car (Cayman) really becomes special when you move to the GT4. Yes it gets more expensive, I realize. But the reason for these questions is that if I am going to sell and older classic Porsche and buy new, I don't want to get something that I will regret and fall asleep behind the wheel with. PDK spears to be good for DD and track, but manual seems to be the key to fun driver engaged weekend driving. Keep posting the comments.

FWIW - I've had an '88 Carrera since new and just picked up a 2015 base Cayman, 6mt, X73 suspension. So far, I love it. I did drive several PDK cars and, as impressive/quick as they are, I found them less engaging. The manual transmission in these cars is really nice. I'd like a little more power than the base car has but I did't find the "S" all that much quicker and the base car isn't a slouch by any means. One day I'll swap in a 3.8 or 4.0:-)

Depreciation - I think it will be steep on the newer cars. Lots of 2014 Cayman S cars out there in the mid-$50's. I'd say find one with your "must have" options. Other stuff can be added later.
