gear cable brass fitting broken? pics!
![]() ![]() I noticed I had problems shifting 2nd 4th and reverse. I checked the gear cables and notice the brass part is slit out of where it's suppose to be 1st pic is how I found it, brass piece out of the fitting 2nd pic is how it's suppose to be. I can shift all gears but only a few times and it falls back out. What's wrong and how do I fix it? I know it's because the brass part keeps falling out. What do I do? Thanks! 2003 Boxster |

I lost 1st, 2nd, and reverser on thanks giving day. I limped along in third and fourth gear to a Porsche shop. One of the two shift cables broke so both are being replaced. I have 105,000 miles on my 1997 Boxster.
I just replaced the motor mount which was completely destroyed. the rubber bushing was totally separated from the support frame. It must have been that way for quite a long time and I believe the bad motor mount had something to do with the deterioration of the shifting cables. I was experiencing vibration at certain RPM's for quire a while. After replacing the motor mount the shifting was much smoother as well as starting from a stop became smoother as well. Cause and effect (bad motor mount, broken shift cable) ?

I'm seeing more and more failing boxster shifter cables at the shop.......i expect them to be the next common failure, i have seen no relation to engine mounts or short shifters yet.....but all failing in similar spots

I concur, the shifter cables on these cars have a limited life - particularly the plastic bushings on the end (which you cannot replace separately - we might be looking into having them manufactured). I don't have a good article on the shift cables, but the short shift kit article in our tech articles section shows the removal of the cables at the shifter end, and the engine drop article shows the removal of the cables at the transmission end, so that covers the info...

Old thread but I didn't realize this was a common problem? Numeric Racing makes replacement cables but did Porsche address this with replacement cables if it's that common?
