Oil pump drive

1997 completely disassembled, due to the hex shaft that drives oil pump falling back in to the "counter"? shaft. going to try to upload the pics of and can some one explain how the shaft is supposed to be retained ?

The IMS "counter" shaft end that retains the oil pump drive shaft is similar to the oil pump gear end. Internal hex shape. If it failed I would guess someone drilled into the IMS shaft.
