Gear selection problem. Down to 2 gears.

All of a sudden I can only select 2 gears on my Bpoxster those being 3rd and 4th.
Its as though a linkage has failed?? Hopefully not bigger gearbox issues??

Has anybody else had this issue and if so what was the fix please? Thank you for any help.

To confirm the gearbox is 5 speed manual. The gearstick is now almost like using a spoon stirring a bowl of soup........lots of slack.!!!

Check the shifter cables where they attach to the gear box, they are prone to come loose or even pop off.

OK guys it looks like the shifter cables may have slipped off.
After taking the centre console out everything looks ok at the gearshift end as in nothing appears to be hanging off.
To get to the gearbox end do I do this from underneath the car and remove the two large plastic trays to get to the gearbox shift?
Thank you for any help and advice.

Judging by the photos on the tech info is the location of the gear shift on the transmission towards the rearmost of the driveshafts?? Apologies for the dumb questions but I am struggling for space and access under the car. I am praying this job is relatively easy to get to working with a jack and axle stands!!

Under the rear of the car, passenger's side, just ahead of the muffler you will find the other end of the cables. Common problem is the cable retainer clips popping out:

Or the cable ends (red arrows) popping off the balls:

Thank you for your help very much appreciated. It was the vertical link it had popped off the top. I don't know why it should do that. Took me 2 minutes to sort. Guess I need a new one of those if it's worn?? Don't want that to happen again in a hurry!!

They are a "wear" item.
