1998 Boxster tires

just bought this car. can anyone tell me if i can put wider tires on it without modification. it currently has 255/40/r17 on the back.

depends on the wheel width. What width is the wheel 8,9,10??? To go wider, you need the right wheel with the correct offset. Too wide a wheel with the wrong offset and you rub either on the inside shock tower or outside on the fender. You want all of the wheel dimensions and then contact Tire Rack and ask someone there what will fit.

ok on the front i have 7.5 and back i have 8.5. according to tire rack they dont have any other listings other than the 255/40/r17 for the back.

Depends on the wheels that you are using.

Maybe a better question would be to ask what you are trying to achieve with the wider tires? How much you are willing to trade wear for what you hope to achieve? (The rears already wear faster than you would want!)

How is the alignment set up? Do you have access to someone who can set the car up to achieve what you want? The guy doing it can make a world of difference. Look for someone who sets up the suspensions of water cooled Porsches for racing.
