Need to replace clutch & pressure plate w/IMS?
Hello,
Just bought my dad's 2004 Boxster S 550 Spyder model with only 12.5k miles. I'm having the IMS bearing replaced with the LN bearing strictly as a precautionary measure. The shop called today and identified hot spots on the pressure plate and wanted to replace both the pressure plate and clutch to prevent possible clutch chattering when reassembled. The IMS bearing will set me back $2.7k and they wanted an additional $1.7k to replace the clutch & pressure plate which I declined. If the car had 30-40k miles I might have had them replaced. My question, have any of you had the IMS bearing replaced without replacing clutch and pressure plate and did you have any clutch chatter? I also have a 911 and am familiar with the Porsche tax. Thanks & regards, Jeff.

I don't know who is doing your car, but they must have the jolly roger flying out front.
An entire factory clutch kit (disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, pilot bearing) cost about $400 at list price. As they would already have to have allowed for removing and reinstalling your existing clutch in the process of doing the IMS, they are flat out screwing you out of the additional $1.7K.

the normal (non oil fed) LN ims should cost around $1500 including labor, figure a little extra for fresh oil, flywheel bolts etc....
clutch kit will vary from 4-800 depending on supplier.... no additional labor at all..... the dual mass flywheel is pricey but generally not needed to be replaced.... I work for an indy shop and have done 100+ LNs
