Cayman advice

Hi all,

Long time lurker and first time poster! I'm planning on buying a Cayman within the next year, probably a 981 with PDK.

Are there any known problems/issues that are common to these? Any options that are must haves?

Thanks!

Hi and Welcome! The best advice is to buy the best/newest car you can afford. What will the car be used for? Daily driver; Weekender; garage queen; track use?
The 981's are great cars. They do not have any IMS concerns. The PDK is well evolved and reliable.
Whatever car you get, have a pre-purchase inspection done by an independent Porsche specialist. It's well worth the $300 bucks or so. Get a car with a known service history. Watch out for flood damaged cars. Carfax doesn't tell you everything.

Anything 2009 and later is pretty bulletproof. Most options are personal preference. I do think Sport Chrono is desirable because it really wakes up a PDK car but it can be added later to any PDK car for $1500ish.

Thanks for the advice. I plan on doing the occasional drivers school (~1-2 yr), and some autocrosses. I’m in Ohio and plan on daily driving it 6-8 months/yr, using a GTI the rest of the year.

I really feel the Cayman is the real spirit of Porsche. A few years ago I drove a 2009 pdk cayman at mid-ohio and fell in love with the feel of it!

Congrats to those of you that already have one.

If you do go with the 2009 -2012 Cayman PDK, you might want to consider an exhaust upgrade - the PDK car sounds amazing at full throttle, but crap most other times. I think with the 981 Porsche added the piped in intake / exhaust note, which sounds better from inside car - 981 sounds better than 987 - but I would still want the sport exhaust as well.

For me the sound is a part of the experience, even if it doesn't affect performance

Can you link to anything more about how to add this into a PDK car? I have a 981 PDK without it and I'd be interested in that...
