PCM display gone dark

I have just bought a 2000 Boxster S and while the PCM works - I'm guessing navigation excluded but that's not an issue, the display has lost it's lighting, so I can't read the screen.
It wasn't an issue for the previous owner, he knew which bits to press, but it's not much good for me. Can these things be fixed, or do I donate it to a museum and get something newer and better?
