Second Key dead in 987.2
The second ignition key in my previously owned 2009 987.2 Cayman won't start the car. It unlocks the trunk, frunk, and doors just fine.
When inserted into the ignition, the dash displays 'Key 2'. But the full dash instrumentation doesn't come on and turning it won't engage the starter. The key looks identical to the fully functional 'Key 1' so I suspect that the car's DME has somehow "forgotten" the transponder. Yet I find it odd that it does recognize it as 'Key 2' - seems like if it didn't recognize the transponder that it wouldn't do anything. Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions? Yes, I'm sure the dealership can assist me but funds are limited. TIA!

I had this same problem with the second key for my 2009 Cayman. After several trips to the dealer, and the replacement of the offending key ($300+) they installed a Kessy module which had to be ordered from Germany. The total cost of this adventure is unknown as the car had a factory CPO warranty which covered the repair. My guess - over $1000.

The Kessy module runs your keyless entry system and communicates with your key through antennas located at various points in the car. I think the system is similar for Porsche/VW/Audi. This system requires dealer programming to make a replacement key work. There may also be a lifetime limit to the number of keys before the module needs to be replaced.
