The Box is a bargain
I recently read in a business magazine--I think it was Forbes--that Porsche makes 10 percent of its profit from Boxsters and 40 percent from 911s. (The rest is from the sale of parts, engineering services and other stuff.) What that says to me is that it probably costs little more to manufacture a 911 than to build a Boxster, but that the profit margin on overpriced 911s is way higher. I don't know what the comparative Boxster/911 units are, and maybe that's part of the reason the 911 is more profitable overall, but it's interesting...
