Where to find private/dealer listings

Hey Canadians,

As per the title, do you know where I would find online or other seller's listings for Porsches? I have seen some of the cars on autotrader but lost out on the few that I was interested in.

I am looking to avoid the import duties but still hopefully get a car that suits me:

- pre-1990, preferably post-1978 and definitely not 1974-76
- good mechanical and overall condition
- discrete colour- not red or yellow
- well under $30K

If you know of any good sites OR private sellers, please let me know!

Thanks.

Richard

Good luck. That's why many of us look south & import. Check Autotrader.ca - all the dealers list there anyway. PCA sites are also possibles.

Auto Trader is probably the best source. There's also autonet.ca - they have less, but still worth a look. I've found a lot of the prices on Auto Trader are really high, especially the dealer prices. I'm assuming you're aware of Gentry Lane? (Dupont, between Bathurst and Dufferin) Although their prices are high, too.

I bought mine through Auto Trader (private sale, not dealership) for what I think was a fair price (maybe I got lucky?). I really wanted a car for fun, so I didn't want to go through all the hassles of getting one across the border, plus I wasn't willing to invest the cash to travel to pick it up, do a PPI, etc. Since then, though, I've read some encouraging stories about importing from the USA.

What I noticed with Auto Trader is that you see the same cars there for a long time - for example, the gold 73 911T for $26,000 has been there for a couple months - you can probably guess why. Gentry Lane has a 76 targa listed which has been there for just as long. In case you're interested, they're asking $13,900, and it has 146K on it. (I had to email them, and that was back in October, so they might have changed the price - also, didn't say if it was km's or miles). The one I bought had only been listed a couple days.

You might also try Peninsula Imports (peninsulaimports.com). They're in Oakville, right on the south side of the QEW. They list their inventory online. No idea what their prices are like, as they deal in newer stuff, and I'm only in tune with earlier models.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Chris

Thanks for the help guys. The Porsche Club of Americas site was very helpful.

I had gone to see the 76 911 targa at Gentry Lane. Very nice car in terms of the exterior and interior. John (the manager) told me that he wouldn't go below $15K!!! but my mechanic told me that there were likely a few headaches in the engine and there were no receipts.

I also missed out on the 72 911T targa (in black) on autotrader.ca. That car was more my style in terms of the vintage but I was really busy with work for a couple of months. and couldn't get out to Ottawa.

I guess I have to keep on looking!

I bought my 911 off of the classifieds section of this site. Ya gotta be 'Johnny on the Spot' to get the deals...

This was the thread... FS: 1977 911S 2.7 Widebody Kit I emailed the seller and told him to call me. I wired him the $$$ and drove nearly 3000 miles to get it.

Here's one for you....(insert usual disclaimer) car looks good (cept it needs wheels in my opinion) and the drive home would be great.

http://www.914club.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=23171&hl=911&st=0

'80 SC

fresh top end and runs perfectly

The engine is a 3.0 CIS. Stock 185hp. With headers, maybe 200hp

110K on the bottom end and 6K on the top. The top end included a FULL head rebuild ($1700), rings and all new seals. Piston/Cylinders are Mahle and were in spec and reused.

Well, if you're interested in coming all the way to Vancouver, then there are lots of them. Here's a few places I visited while looking but in the end I found one in the Autotrader (online) in Calgary: 1987 Venitian Blue Carrera with SSI heat exchangers, B&B muffler, 17" 3piece wheels, chipped, 51,800Km. Autotrader misprinted both phone numbers he provided. I figured out the error and dialed the other Alta Area code and got a hold of him. I bought it over the phone, flew out and drove it back. 11 mos later I'm still loving it!

Anyhow, I digress. Eurosport Imports is a one man band (Alex), seems to be a pretty good guy. He searches the world and imports them and sells them. Weissach is a big name around here; they're in the business to make money but they have a good reputation as well. Can't tell you much about Urban Garage. Sometimes MB dealer has them. Here's the links

Have you checked Auto Trader? There's a bunch listed there (trader.ca). Several have been there a long time, so you might be able to talk them down. A couple on there are WAY overpriced.

I may be interested in selling mine.

Coupe, and Red though....... Not quite your cup of tea....

www.saskjunction.com/porsche

Those pics are from when I went to buy it. I have more photos at home though.

Anyhow, 83 SC ROW car. (Came right over from Germany. Have the letter from Porsche regarding its origin)

In the pic, the mirror is missing, but its all fixed. 103,000 miles

Runs great. Interior is great. (New leather on all the seats) Dash has a tiny crack in it. Car had A/C. most of the parts are out, but I have boxes of A/C parts.

Short Shift kit (Have original). Alpine Sound System (Have original Blau) New rear shocks. New fresh air fan. Upgraded PIAA Extreme headlights. New custom fit HQ car cover (Never used, just got it as a gift) New motor mounts, bracket, and all new CV joints going in in 2 weeks ($1500+ worth of work)

Dribbles a bit of oil. But doesnt smoke.

I have my eye on an M Coupe. Thats the only reason I would sell it.

Here is a couple more shots of the car from my holiday to the rockieslast year.... what a blast.

On the flip side...... Anyone interested in a decent set of Fuchs? (Off of the above car) I think I have a line on something a little newer looking for wheels.

Stormin: As of this moment, the entire car is for sale. Therefore I am not going to worry about the wheel swap.

If I do keep it though, I probably will change the wheels and will drop you a line.

Coldstart,

Try these links, not exclusive to Porsche though:

http://www.bramclassauto.com/photoads.php

RM Auctions is having a classic car auction at the Toronto Int'l centre this month. You can view the list of cars available here:

Good Luck

Thanks for the help. I have already seen most of the cars at the Bramhall site (starting prices are way too high) but some are nice. I think I will submit an offer soon on one. The auction site was pretty cool but no interesting Porsches.

I may convince my Dad to put his 1968 Corvette up for auction on that site. Anybody have any feedback on auctions generally? The car's info:

1968 Corvette (first year of newer model)
ONE OWNER
4-speed manual, smaller V8 (327ci V8 300hp)
Hardtop convertible
Lots of mileage (approx. 300K miles) and regular maintenance
Burgundy, maroon
New paint and finished chrome (2 years ago refinishing of fiberglass, no damage beforehand, original colour)
Redone structure (2 years ago)
Redone engine (2 years ago, not sure if rebuilt)

We are not that eager to sell.....but if the price (or trade) was right.....
