Setting the timing
Hi all:
I was really looking forward to going to the Pfaff Porsche thing this weekend but I broke a cardinal rule: don't fix it, if it ain't broke. I decided to replace the points on my car but I can't seem to get the timing right and the car to fire up. Anyone have some knowledge, hopefully a timing light and willing to help me get my car running? Beer, food and good company provided (I will also pick up the timing light if you can't make it out!!) |
Hey Richard, I've got a timing light you can borrow, but they're only about $20 or so at Canadian Tire. I set the timing by myself, having never done it before, only reading the article in 101 Projects about it. I think the trick is to make sure you know your distributor's pointing to TDC for cylinder #1, rather than #4, and that can be tricky the first time. When I did my valve adjustment the pictures in 101 didn't look like my distributor, so I had to find another picture to make sure I was pointing it the right way. The pic that was the same as mine was the one in the online article about valve adjustments:
