Would you send your photoId + Credit Card photocopy to an online store so you can buy from them?
This is what Pelican is asking me to do... I just can't believe they make it so difficult when all I want is buy from them. I understand they want some sort of security and fraud prevention by requesting that information but why do I have to expose myself to identity theft when ordering online? Just because its an international order? So there's no fraud on US-based orders? Have any of you sent your photoId + Credit card photocopy to Pelican? I have bought in the past from our host but because my address changed (we moved to a new house) now I need to send that information before they can process my order. This is so sad.. I'm trying to support our host but... I just can't believe it...

I've ordered from Canada without having to give that info.
If they are asking for it because of a recent move, then I think they're just being dilligent. Hard to fault them for that.

I've never been asked for that. The only time I ran into any issue was on a large order ($12 or $1300, I think), they said anything coming to Canada over $1000 they wanted the cash wired to them, rather than credit card. A bit of a PITA, because the wire transfer fee is $35 or something, but no big deal.
I can understand your concern re identity theft, but just make sure you're using proper encryption on your email program, or just fax it to them (much more secure).

The same thing happened to me when I purchased a Dell laptop around the same time that I moved. Because of changing my address my Visa was declined. I was told that I had to wait 30 days to prove that the card wasn't stolen. Dell wouldn't accept me bringing ID to their Don Mils office. In the end I did a money transfer over the phone.

I know that Wayne will not try to steal my identity but its the principle of doing this. I mean the practice of sending that information is the worst thing you can do to protect yourself from identity theft.
I can fax it and sure enough the transmission is "secure" but what guarantees I get that someone will not mis-use that information or sell it on the internet or simply instead of shred just throw it like that in the garbage can?? Maybe I've seen too many movies, maybe I have a criminal mind, but its part of my daily Job to identify and close security gaps for the benefit of our customers and partners and most important the company. The accountabilities are huge. For those who have sent this information have you ever read the privacy policies? And in the rare event you actually read them did you understand them? Just to give you an example I bought a nice present for my wife in Winners for xmas.. do you remember the parent company of Winners was hacked and all Canadian credit cards were illegally accessed? I remember because it was on TV and because I got a new card and number Did I know that my information was going to be stored and used outside of Canada without my approval?? Nope.Doesn't MasterCard have a fraud department that protect us the customers from fraud? But who will protect you if someone steals your identity? Just read this (don't put too much attention to the last paragraph just above the references) :http://idtheft.about.com/od/dataandstat1/p/GeneralStats.htm General Link for IdTheft: http://www.safecanada.ca/identitytheft_e.asp

I routinely fax copies of my corporate Amex to hotels for conventions, meeting rooms etc. It is a common business practise & nothing new. But Pelican has never asked me . . .

I just bought about $1,100 US of 'stuff' from them. No photo ID, just a Visa number. One order for $800, one for about $300 a week later.
This is my second or third order. I've never sent them photo-ID, or anything other than a Visa number...although they did request the three digit number from the back of my card. Maybe it's the fact that you went over $1,000? Maybe you should place two smaller orders.

My order is for $334 so its really small.
I wouldn't have to send anything if my address hadn't changed... So if yours change you'll have to send your information to Pelican
