Yikes - Ontario Drive clean proposed changes

It looks like they are going to make 1988 and newer cars continue forever (or at least an extra 10 years) on the Ontario emissions control program.

Would this disuade you from buying an 88 carrera?

That blows! Where did you get your information. I just got an 88 and it passed the emissions but not by much. I was looking forward to never having to test it again.

What a stupid program, I guess I will just have to register my car in North Bay or something to be exempt from the program.

I thought North Bay was still within Ontario and subject to Ontario laws....but I hear that in Alberta that as long as your car gets less than 20 mpg and emits a foul black oil trail-- you're good to go! No, I don't know this from experience and yes, I'm sure my car in its current condition would pass the test

Richard, unless they've changed the rules emissions laws only apply to southern Ontario - anything north of Muskoka basically is exempt. I know this because we have customers with cars registered to places like Parry Sound, etc. that are e-test exempt.

I had some "issues" passing the emissions test last year with my 930 with its altered exhaust. My renewal for the plates was in November.

I waited until January.......then officially 20 years old.........voila - no emission test required anymore.

The car is an '87 though.............

I guess the only way around that is to get an older 911 body, with an updated engine.....no?

1987 and older cars are now exempt from emmissions testing.

1988 and newer cars need to be tested until they are 30 years old.

That is the main reason I am considering selling my 89 and keeping my 84. Otherwise, the 84 would be the first to go.

I either have to re-instal my cat every two years, keep my older car, or drive with the cat in place.

You need to get a cottage and register your car there.

The Ontario laws are in fact ridiculous, not only will I have to get an e-test every 2 years for the life of my 89 3.2, but this may change in the future to every year!

I'm in Ottawa right now, if I had an address 45 km west in Arnprior, I wouldn't be subject to e-tests. Some folks I know are registering there cars,/licenses under the address at their cottage.
