Porsche 911sc / Carrera Owners In Vancouver?
Hello folks,
I'm new to the Porsche scene and have to admit that I do not own one. I think that I've worked hard enough to finally join the club but before committing, I'd like to learn more about the 911sc and/or the Carerra (84 - 89). I was wondering if there are any owners in Vancouver who could possibly spare an hour or two to show me their 911 in regards to what to look for and any known trouble spots upon viewing one for purchase and answer a whack load of questions. Of course, there is always the option of a pre-purchases inspection but of course, I'd like to be able to know what to look for on my own as much as possible. Hey, welcome to the forum..
I wouldn't hesitate to contact your local PCA club and maybe get a ride along with one of them and compare the cars. Some say the SC is under powered but on the other hand they have a more raw feel than the later Carreras. The engine management system on the later cars is more workable and a little more easy to extract a few ponies by chipping. That being said I do love my SC, but the fuel injection (k-jet) is pretty limited for HP. Mine works well so it is staying for now. Good luck with your search!

I am primarily looking for either an 83 SC or an 86+ simply because of the G-50 gearbox. I'm also a true believer in the "classic" 911 with more raw feel over the newer ones. As for power, I'm not too concerned about extracting power. I've grown out of that phase and looking for a stock, reliable Porsche. I've own(ed)a 1978 Alfa Romeo Spider, 1989 Toyota Supercharged MR2, a 1989 BMW 325i, and a 1993 Toyota MR2 Turbo in which all were reliable. After I started to modify and extracted power out of the MR2s, I started to see reliablility issues and I do not want to dig myself into the same hole again. So in other words, I want a true classic Porsche 911 garage queen with collector status license plates. ![]() Where would I find the contact informationi to my local PCA? I'm assuming there will be a large presence as I live in Vancouver. Please let me know. Thanks! Mike |

hey there and welcome. I have a 1980 SC project that I am working on right now that has alot of the rust spots that you would be looking for in this type of car. I am located on the island so if your ever over here look me up (flyinhigh@shaw.ca) and you can see first hand the issues.

FWIW even though I recently sold mine, the SC is a great car. galvanised, decent power ( much better with an exhaust backdate ), and a pretty much bulletproof engine/trans. when people ask me which 911 to buy my first reccommendatin is always a good SC. if you like it, then you can move into longnoses or 964's, etc.

Much better off to buy a few books on SC's or early Carrera's.
Bentley Repair Manuals are a good source. Wayne's book 101 projects is good. Or search the Pelican boards. Why get some prior info? Because it takes 3 days of continuous talking to explain all the issues, benefits, problems of those years and it's just too much information to digest in a short time. Read and study first, then consider buying one with a PPI, of course. Maintaining one is not cheap; the parts are not cheap and some repairs can add up to a few thousand Dollars. If you find a "bargain" you'll be sorry later. You either pay the price for one in good shape that hasn't been neglected, or you'll get a klonker, have no fun driving it and at some point pay for the necessary repairs.
