Thanks for the useful information!

Are these Xantrex battery chargers readily available?

A quick search showed the "Xantrex TrueCharge2 40Amp Battery Charger - 3 Bank 12V" for $537 at Amazon.ca. Is this a typical price?

They are available on-line from marine and RV (users that normally are hardest on batteries) suppliers.

They start at about $135 and are available in 10, 20, 40 and 60A units. The 20A and up units are functionally the same other than output. The 10A unit is basic in that you cannot connect a remote battery temperature probe to it and remote panel to control current output, but then 10A is fine for car sized batteries. Units with outputs of 20A or more, I'd want the remote panel which enables the user to set the max current as well as other features remotely.

Because of where they are used (permanently mounted in a boat or RV), you need to wire in an AC cord and output cables with clamps. That usually turns most people off.

Xantrex Truecharge2 chargers.

These chargers are not for anyone looking for a cheap charger, but they are the best as far as control goes. Just download their Owner's Guide and you'll see what it is capable of. The 20A unit with remote panel is on my shopping list.

I can do some wiring, no problem. I'll keep my eyes open for pricing on these units.

You mention that the 20A unit with remote panel is on your shopping list, what do you use at the moment for charging your batteries and storing your 911?

For the longest time, I used a fully manual 6V/12V 1A Canadian Tire battery charger, the one in the black metal enclosure. I think I bought it back in the mid 80s. I still have it. I also have an old 6A charger that I got at Consumers Distributing back in the 70s. It was used for on cars. The transformer buzzes (would need to dip the windings). It still works, but is rarely used since I never have battery issues.

I later bought a couple of SmartShot 12V 900 mA chargers sold by YUASA where the unit plugs into the wall. Battery Tender has identical units. They are nothing special. They were used on my motorcycles.

I have three Optimate IIIs, two over here for my motorcycles and one overseas for my motorcycle there.

For the 993, I bought a CTEK 3300 (actually, I have two). An OK charger, but it isn't a three-stage charger as advertized. Both units charge to the end voltage, then shut off and when reaching 12.6V, switch back on again and the cycle repeats. This is two stage charging and actually better for the battery, so I'm not complaining.

I never new I had so many chargers.

Enough about the chargers...

From Costco, $599 (42") which is still $400 cheaper than the one at half price at CDN Tire.

And made in Canada for a change, http://www.spginternational.com/en/Company.aspx

Pretty technical, huh, and I haven't even started yet.

Just like chrome won't get you home, tool boxes won't either.

Phil, I've never had a battery failure in 37 years...and its not like I replace them every five years to avoid being stranded. Going on year 14 with my present daily driver battery. Only two more years to go to break the record of the last one which was 16 years old when I sold the car.

Sheesh, and some owners think 10 years out of a battery is good.

Start tomorrow... Send the wife as its a "Special Buy" so no rain check.

I got that one a few years back. Very useful but will not go through the spark plug hole.

Not putting miles on your car is like not having sex with your girlfriend, so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend.

Never mind Phil... I need his in early April and I'm guessing that since the gears are not in yet it won't be back by then

I'll PM you but you have to be there when they open the door.

You are correct, I'm doing everything I can in the mean time, but we are at the mercy of the gear (and cam) gods.
Hoping we don't have to go into plan B mode.

Don't tempt me Don. I believe enough damage was done with those speedo pics. Looked like two squirrels fighting in a Crown Royal bag.

Honestly though, it helps a lot. I keep losing screws taking my intercooler shroud off. The magnet and claw attachment help.
