Have you part painted Guards red panels?

My 88 Carrera is showing signs of surface rust at the base of the front wing near the bumper bellows. I've checked it out and it is purely cosmetic but I obviously don't want it to go any further. I can repair and prep it easily or give it to a bodyshop. Car's general condition is excellent so I don't really want the whole wing resprayed.

I thought about doing a local prep and then airbrushing (or similar) the small area before compounding to get a finish.

Anybody tried this type of repair and with what results?

(I am going to go to a bodyshop I trust to get them to look at it as well but I do fancy keeping as much original paint as poss)

Roy,
I have a guard's red 85, original paint.
I had it flatbedded to the shop and the buckles from the wheel straps dented the front panel directly behind the bellows-on both sides no less. I talked to the bodyshop paint guru, and he said they take computer measurements of paint color from several areas of the car, and average them together to come up with the color- to match fade, etc. I'll be honest, they did a great job- even looking I cannot tell there was any touchup or paint work done. The rubber surrounds help hide any subtle color changes there.
