5 Speed
If I just came across an old 5 speed from an old 3 series. would that be a straight swap from my old 4 in my 76 2002? I have been told the drive shaft is shorter for the 5 speed, is that the only change that must be made?

No you would have to shorten drive shaft and shifter linkage

Trans mount is moved a little rearward. there is a piece to buy from one of the bimmer shops.
shift tower has to be moved and shaft shortened.
