Resurrecting Tex
Hey guys. Yea I know, your eyes roll when you see my posts...."oh, it's HIM again" So , I thought that I would document my efforts here in this nondescript forum. As it doesn't seem that too many people visit here...I figured What's the harm?
First of all...The forum title. It probably needs a little explanation before anyone gets religious or political on me. There is a Car....I call it Tex. it is a 1989 Jaguar XJ6 Vanden Plas. It was a good car. But, It died some time ago. It had some mechanical issues and was sent to a garage. While at the garage it was robbed of it's radio and a good deal of damage was done in the process. The car was totaled and stuck to the side. YEARS later. I said..."what are you doing with that car"? My brother was going to junk it, but it had been sooo good to him he couldn't bring himself to do it. The ride, the feel, the look. To get it running involved doing the starter....Not an easy task on the Straight six Jag motors. After that the battery kept draining and the fuel pump went south. The battery problem was as simple as cleaning a buttload of connectors and grounds whereas the Fuel pump was a bit of a pain. I finally wound up rebuilding the old Bosh unit when the new ebay pump failed. Then there was the door latches (notorious on Jaguars) and a bunch of other stuff. With the current heat spell and the prospect of actually putting Tex back on the road, It occurred that we might want the AC to work. Tex being a black car and the daily temperature getting to spitting range of a hundred daily. I was told that the AC worked before the vandalism so..into the fray I went. That brings us up to date. Currently I am wrestling with The dashboard damage. Most of it is run of the mill, but, there is some damage to the airbox that may require getting a new one. Here's a few pics.. ![]() the crimp connectors to factory wiring lets me know these are radio wires. ![]() Three broken wires that go to nothing..And possibly why the AC is not working. ![]() ...And a general idea of where they are located ![]() Center console removed. I have to take the entire console out to get to the wires. ![]() Above is where the potentiometer SHOULD be. There is no sign of it.

more Tex
More Pics:
![]() The Console is out...Isn't that neater? The devastation is pretty apparent but limited to mostly radio wiring. ![]() All non- jag, aftermarket wiring. I will sort it out. ![]() This is the Ground strap / Security strap to the radio. It must have slowed down the thief a bit, but eventually snapped. ![]() It bolts in to the center tube just forward of the gear shift.

Continuing saga...
Another morning of near hundred degree heat. Before going too far I checked all the fuses and found an inline 7.5 amp fuse behind the passenger kick panel that had gone south. A quick trip to Autozone for a pack of fuses later and I had both fans working. Just goes to show you that you should check fuses and grounds first.
I jumped the AC compressor and although the clutch works...there was no coolness to the hoses and the Sight glass showed no signs of movement. Sigh. I am guessing that by the looks of the grey ooze in there that the system is clogged. I have located 2 fittings for the A/C guages, but one of them is a funny small fitting that I can't use. The other (low side? ) shows a static of about a hundred that goes down considerably when the clutch is engaged. Pretty sure from the sight glass that at this point there is no flow. ![]() Well... I do have a nifty aluminum condenser that I was saving for the AC upgrade at some future time, so, If I HAVE to take the system apart.... Replacing the A/C condenser was a bit of a pain, but the new one is settting in nicely now and the lines are routed well. I will remove the compressor, have it checked and rebuilt if needed, clean the lines and put it all back together. The system will be set to R 134. Thinking of a new drier...will check on prices.

codes and faults
With another round comes more repairs.
I was getting Check engine light. a Fuel Error code of 14. A little research on jag lovers ( a great site) led me to the temperature sensor located on the thermostat housing. A bit of cleaning later and some bulb grease on the sensor pins did the trick. The error cleared and stayed away. Next we needed to deal with the little lightning bolt on the dash. This indicated a fuse out. The ACM gave me "fuse error 1" which means that a fuse was out on the driver side fuse box. I cleaned and inspected the fuses on the driver side fuse box with no result and was scratching my head for a second until I realized this was an english car and the english have right hand drive cars. Doh! So over to the passenger side fuse box and I found 2 suspect fuses. 1 bad from corrosion and the ride system fuse burnt outright. This car had it's ride leveling system removed and replaced ages ago so no one noticed when the fuse went bad. With the other fuse replaced and all connections cleaned odd lights are appearing all over the car. Pretty cool. ![]() So now I have no errors and no dashboard lights to worry about. Only took a few hours, some wd-40 and some emery boards. The car is running better as well.
