OT -- Lamborghini SUV

So I'm pulling out of my driveway to go to work this morning, and down the street, a vehicle that sort of looked like a first generation Hummer pulls out at the same time, but about a block away...

Okay, I think, a Hummer. I've seen a few of those. Thing about it was, the truck had a nasty - and I mean nasty - exhaust pitch - like a race motor. Raspy sounding. Plus, I could hear it shift gears. Weird, I think. Wonder what it is?

So I go investigate, and get close to it at a stop sign. Sure enough, the rear deck read "Lamborghini." Had two women in it, too. And the woman driver punched the gas...hard. Let me tell you, that thing moved. She knew how to drive it. Must've been hitting about 6500 RPMs and a good sixty in less than eight seconds.

I loved it What a great way to start the day!

Nothing beats teh sound of a 12 cyl motor. While I love my flat 6 at 5k, I would give an eye for that v12. Start up us almost as cool... WHOMP!

I think the Lambo beast is called an LMR. Not sure though, but I think I remember reading that it has a gas tank between 40-70 gallons, gets like 4 miles to the gallon, and has a V12. Looks more heavy duty than a Hummer in my opinion. Never seen one in person though...

Yep, while I'm sure the Porsche Cayenne will wipe the floor with that thing - the LM004 or something - it is a nifty machine.

I saw one in Marin County a couple years ago when I lived there. The same nasty, high-pitched exhaust note. That's because it has a frickin countach V12! Apparently, it was developed in response to the same RFP that the Hummer was. The Hummer won the bid, obviously. But same idea - military 4x4 vehicle.

Marin is a great place to see cars. My favorite chicks-in-a-car story was when my buddy and I saw a couple of totally hot, obviously wealthy 40-something babes doing 100+ in a mean black custom Pantera on their way to Tiburon. I love to think what they were up to!

LM002, or 'Cheetah' ... had the Miura V-12, and pre-dated the Countach! Rather doubtful it was developed directly for the Hummer RFP, because that required a 24 Volt electrical system and multi-fuel engine which only diesels and gas turbines can satisfy! I seem to recall from Autoweek in the mid-70s that Arab shieks were the target market for the LM002.

Nothing very practical about that V-12 ... in a military vehicle! The US govt. could afford the $1200 tires, but keeping the 6 downdraft Webers in tune in the middle of desert conditions during a war might be a bit of a stretch for the average truck mechanic!

In what context do you predict "wipe the floor"? From the looks of both vehicles I would bet the LM would kick the pepper car's arse in any off road situation. And which car has more bling? Lamborghini wins there too thanks to the ocean of Boxters lined up in traffic jams out here.

Anyone seen that joke of a editorial review in the latest issue of P of the Cayenne being tested up North? What a crock, that mini van is a joke. And was that supposed to be some sort of comparison when they mentioned the Jeep and how it was left behind?

Put a 15" log in front of a Cayenne ... and see how quickly it high-centers! Not a serious SUV for true off-road conditions ...

The LM002 would take a 15" log in its' stride with those massive custom-sized Pirellt Scorpion $1200 tires that only a Hummer could appreciate!

In a 1/4 mile race up a 30% grade sand dune ... me thinks the Lambo 'Cheetah' would win over a Cayenne every time ... something about the 450 hp V-12 and traction from the Pirelli's ...

The guy that lives next door to me has a 1991 LM002 and
a 2001 carrera.
I drove the Lambo several times, it's a serious machine. Very fast for an SUV and it sounds like a race car.
I've been tring to buy it from him for 2yrs.
I did talk him into buying the Carrera though.

It was originally developed for the Saudi Army but they decided they couldn't afford it.

If the Saudis can't.........

That gives me a pretty scary idea of what it cost to maintain one of those beasts.

If you have ever witnessed an LM002 in person it might change your mind... they look tough as nails. Plus the V12 runs and sounds like no other off road vehicle.

The Hummer H2 is junk, nothing more then a re-bodied grocery getter (sorry H2 owners). It's based on the GMT820 platform, the same platform as the Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon. I see more H2’s on the road now then Boxters!

GM’s only saving grace is that you can still buy the functional H1. While not the most reliable piece of hardware it still looks and handles the role of being a true ORV.

years ago i did an audio system in one of the lambo trucks (for marshal goldman leasing)......what a big clumsy heavy truck that isn't really functional on the street, i loved it
the only thing the hummers have on the lambo is reliability, and sorry.......the h2 isn't a "real" hummer......real hummers have snorkel kits, turrets, and no key

Ok...the hummer line is in reference to something other than the production vehicle.

Now this is in reference to the original HMMV.....
It's what transported me and my fire team through Saudi...it was there when I was stuck on the outskirts of freakin Cairo Egypt on sep 11...and I would bet come what may in 2003 it will be there again!

That is tough as nails and proven on the toughest testing grounds in the world!

On another note...1989 I was in London and did see the Lambo up close, but instead I took pictures of the Porsche parked on the street outside the Lambo dealership.

It's actually HMMWV - High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle.

I love the military's gift for accurate decriptions!
